First release of Zoogle

Anders writes: "Indexdata has released the first version of Zoogle. This is a Z39.50 gateway to the Google web index. It is based upon SimpleServer which can be downloaded at the same URL." Love them Google APIs.

Cheshire-2.33

From the official release: "Cheshire has support for storage of pre-parsed SGML/XML and also for virtual databases (a single database name can search and retrieve from multiple physical databases on the server). New documentation on the new commands and features in the docs directory." Very interesting! To download (or for more info) see the Cheshire site.

YAZ-1.8.4

Kevin writes: "There is a new release of the YAZ toolkit . YAZ is a C/C++ programmer's toolkit supporting the development of Z39.50v3 clients and servers. In the release, there is a new ZOOM function, ZOOM_connection_last_event, that returns type of last event (such as "receive data", "send data", "apdu received", etc.) and two new YAZ client commands: . (dot, which sources a script of YAZ client commands), and ! (to execute shell command)."

YAZ release 1.8.2 available

Kevin writes: "There is a new release of the YAZ toolkit. YAZ is a C/C++ programmer's toolkit supporting the development of Z39.50v3 clients and servers. In the new release, there is a new client-side MARC decode/display function which properly rejects non-ISO2709 records. There are also some ZOOM API changes."

YAZ Release 1.8 available

Sebastian Hammer writes: "There is a new release of the YAZ toolkit available (in addition to maintenance releases of ZAP and Zebra). The most important change is that we include support for an early version of the ZOOM API. ZOOM is an exciting new development in Z39.50, which suggests a common, high-level interface which can be implemented across many toolkits, and in most programming languages. It promises to make life a lot easier for developers of Z39.50 clients."

Simple Multi Target Z39.50 search portal - beta 1

Ian writes: "An initial beta release of the SimpleWebApp component of JZKit is now available for download, evaluation and feedback. JZKit is a 100% pure java (GPL'd) Z3950 tookit with no proprietary component dependencies. The SimpleWebApp application is an experiment in creating a pure java Z39.50 portal capable of searching multiple targets and displaying full or breif records with formatting defined by XSL style sheets. An online demo can be seen here and any comments would be welcome. The application is 100% pure java and is deployed as a .war file. Some minor tomcat configuration is needed to get everything working. You can read about the installation here (There are a few screen shots here too). As always, you can get all the source from Sourceforge."

JZKit-Beta-2

Ian writes: "The Beta-2 Release is of JZKit, an open source pure java Z3950 toolkit is now available here or from sourceforge. JZKit is distributed under the LGPL and supports both origin and target development, but this beta release only features an example client.

The release is aimed at Z3950 developers (It really is for developers only at the moment, and the documentation is almost non-existent) who are interested in a java toolkit and don't mind playing around with beta software. The tookit uses its own internal ASN/BER runtime (Compiler also avialable for download in case you have any pesky private externals, or want to have a go with ISO10161). Right now, the project needs a few interested parties to generate some feedback so we can beat the thing into release shape."

Indexdata making serious progress

After playing with the ZAP module for less than a half hour, having already installed YAZ and played with SimpleServer, and seeing now that they've got a YAZ library built into PHP4, I can now state unequivocally (or is that unequivocably?) that Indexdata kicks some serious booty. There are doing as much directly for our community as any other company there is. Check out their stuff... it works.
